In a lot of ways, pioneers were the O.G. hipsters. They were the first to settle Oregon (before it was mainstream), they all had beards, they liked to eat local… you get the idea. It just makes sense, then, that everyone’s favorite pioneer-themed, travel-based computer game, The Oregon Trail, would get a modern update. The new feature from Travel Oregon is a pretty awesome way to see what epic road trips you can take around the state… but it’s not without its challenges.
First, you have to pick a job, name the members of your party, stock up on supplies, and pick a destination.
I decided to take my fearless band of hipster pals to Mount Hood/Columbia River Gorge, since I had decided that I would be a wine-maker. We packed up the car with our craft beer and dry socks and then hit the road.
You face a lot of the typical road trip drama…
…and some really, really horrible disasters, too.
I won’t spoil too much, but you can meet ghosts, spot Bigfoot, hunt, ski, get pulled over by the cops, tell scary stories, and chat up friendly locals along the way. And, you do get to see some really awesome places, too!
So, it’s totally worth it in the end… if you survive. Whether you’re looking for inspiration for your next vacation, or you’re just looking for a fun distraction while you’re supposed to be working or studying, this Oregon Trail adventure is kind of perfect. It’s a great way to explore from the comfort of your own home. As long as you don’t die of dysentery, that is!
