Capilano Canyon is one of the most beautiful spots for an adventure in all of North America. Every year the park hosts “Canyon Lights,” a winter light festival that transports you into an illuminated treetop wonderland. This year the festival runs from November 23rd through January 28th, 2018 (from 11AM to 9PM, but obviously the real show starts when the sun goes down, usually around 4PM). As you wander throughout the park you’ll be absolutely enchanted by hundreds of thousands of twinkling lights. The iconic suspension bridge, the Treetops Adventure, Cliffwalk, and the rainforest and canyon will make you feel like you’re in a winter wonderland.
One of the major features of this year’s Canyon Lights is the Treetops Adventure, which showcases the world’s 8 tallest Christmas trees! Seven suspension bridges attach eight 250 year-old Douglas Firs, affixed with viewing platforms. That means you’ll be able to gaze out over 110 feet above the forest floor. Each tree is lit up above and below the platforms, for an illuminated masterpiece.
More than just treetop adventure…
There is actually a lot to do at Capilano Canyon besides strolling around the treetops. There’s a “Snowy Owl Prowl”, an area to decorate gingerbread cookies, holiday sing-alongs, wooden ornament decorating workshops, and a Winter Craft Tent. Lastly, a portion of the proceeds from Canyon Lights goes directly to the BC Professional Fire Fighter’s Burn Fund.
The best time to visit is during the week before December 15th and after January 7th. The time between those two dates are pretty popular since most kids are getting out of school around then, and families are on winter holiday breaks.
Keep in mind, due to safety reasons, strollers are not permitted on the treetop attractions. You should carry babies in something like a bjorn.
DON’T FORGET YOUR CAMERA!!!! And make sure it’s charged with lots of space for pictures!
